This issue is currently seen by Nigerians as a frenzied attack, as it has precipitated a whole lot of stress; hectic traffic congestion, pandemonium, mental stress and so on. Let’s get right to it!

Fuel Wahala!!

Sometime in November 2021, the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration moved to override the patent of fuel subsidy, which was going to give rise to the current fuel situation. A sort of controversy came to the fore following reports that the Federal government is planning on paying N5000 to forty million Nigerians as transport allowance. Buhari’s administration had finally given in to pressure and tagged bandits as terrorists. approaching dry season, cases of snakes invading homes: living rooms, stores, cloakrooms majorly: via their water closet system, became rampant and quite extravagant. Well, that’s by the way.

The Federal Government represented by the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed revealed plans to start paying transport allowance to Nigerians for at least six to twelve months from 2022. This palliative according to the government is to alleviate the negative effect of the total fuel subsidy removal which may be enacted by the “second half of 2022”. The Minister reiterated sometime in 2021.

The government complained that fuel subsidy is costing the country resources that should have been channelled to other sections of importance like education and health.

Fuel Subsidy Removal Suspension

The premium motor spirit, otherwise known as fuel, had its subsidy removal suspended by the federal government. The Nigerian government said it will retain fuel subsidy indefinitely and will work on amending the 2022 budget to provide the necessary funds for such a purpose. This was affirmed by the Minister of Finance.

The Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, said the government has realised the timing of its planned removal of petrol subsidy is quite problematic and will worsen the suffering of Nigerians. This just means the government has made a decision not to remove the subsidy in July as planned earlier.

At a meeting with the Senate president, Ahmed Lawan, he mentioned the government is banking on the upcoming Dangote refinery to increase the country’s refining capacity. The Senate President condemned the timing of the planned removal of fuel subsidy.

Mr Lawan made the appeal when he met with the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, and the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva over the planned removal of subsidy on petroleum products by the Federal Government.

Those at the meeting include the Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi, and the Deputy Whip, Aliyu Abdullahi.

Also present were the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Regulatory Authority, Farouk Ahmed, Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mele Kyari, and Commissioned Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Upstream Regulatory Commission, Gbenga Komolafe.

Others are the Special Assistant to the President on Natural Resources, Habib Nuhu, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Finance, Aliyu Shinkafi, and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Nasir Sani-Gwarzo.

On a lighter note, the fuel issue has been quite a lot, dealing with, particularly as to traffic. the congestion has been really intense, horrific, and scary. The other day, while the traffic was crazy hectic, I heard a guy say, seeing how massive the traffic was, he vented “this one no be traffic, this one na car pack”. I couldn’t help but laugh out loud! Hearing that cracked me up to the extent I got teary! How hilarious! It’s been a total mess since the fuel thingy started. I feel for the 9-5 workers; having to leave for work quite early and return really late to leave quite early again the next day, and to think that the cycle continues is devastating. Just thinking about it is heart-wrenching.

Hopefully, this stops soon as the government already implied.
